I want to fast, but how shall I fast?
ANSWER:
First of all before you begin your fast, first ask yourself; why am I fasting? Because the secrete on how you should fast, and what you shouldn't do and not do as you are fasting lies in within the reason why you are fasting.
For example; if you are fasting because you want to loose weight, then you must take the first step of finding someone or buy and read books, magazines, and listen to teachings that will instruct you on the right diet (foods) and training ideas that will help you loose weight, after you have done your home work in that area, then you can begin your fasting.
The word fasting means; to restrain yourself from doing and eating the things you love most (within the realm of your bad habits), so that you may be able to adjust your character to the new life style that your hearts desires to achieve. The mistake that people do when they fast is that, they always fast; (restrain themselves from doing certain things through their time of fasting) but when they finish their fast, they even become worse in that area that they were fasting for, more worse than they were before they began the fast. now; why is that?
Remember that fasting is a method that is applied to bring a change in somebody's life or situation, and not a method of punishing your body by starving yourself so that you may compensate yourself for the wrong choices that you have made.
When you are fasting (restraining yourself from certain things) you must also have people that are helping you to imitate a different pattern of habits that you want to see yourself transform into. For example; if you are fasting for the sake of overcoming lust (a strong craving desire that makes you make wrong decisions and commit sin) and you want to be able to conquer that habit in your life so that you may serve God better,
then you need to have spiritual leaders that you trust, people that can supply you with teachings that will encourage and empower your desire to change, and then as you are fasting try to restrain (keep yourself from) the things (TV shows, internet web pages, books, music, foods, and habits) which entertains that evil lust.
And instead put your energies in some thing constructive like giving financial help, exercising your love, spending your time into listening, learning, reading and taking spiritual instructions from the relationship (spiritual leadership) that encourages your life and motivates your desire to change.
The scripture says in Matthew 6:21; where your treasure (spending of your money, activities, and sacrificial life style) is, there your heart (thoughts, dreams, speech and life) will also be
The word fast means; to locate the place where your treasure box is, and then relocate it (move it) to that place that inspires your change. And some times this also involves the act of sacrificing or giving up certain things, relations, friends or habits that you loved.
